Lighting up the AMP stage: Emma’s and Deborah’s visual art for DGTL

AMSTERDAM April 8, 2025

As the festival is getting closer, we sat down with visual artist Emma Rubikaite and Deborah Mora to talk about their work. This year, they’re teaming up to design the visuals for the iconic AMP stage. We spoke with them about their unique style, their work for DGTL, and what makes their artistry stand out.

“General curiosity and a deep love for the scene initially drew me in, but it was my connection with Studio Raito that opened the door to incredible opportunities, DGTL being one of the highlights”, Emma tells us. Becoming a visual artist was never really part of her plan, but as Emma started working with light and space, creating visuals felt like a natural extension of her creativity. Deborah says that she got fascinated by the idea of connecting image to sound. “ I’ve always loved music so deeply that creating something that could enhance the experience, for me, was a way to show my genuine appreciation while contributing with something meaningful and very personal.”

Visions of light and reflection

Lately, their work often returns to themes of water and reflections. “DGTL marks the start of summer: bright, joyful, and full of energy, the AMP stage embodies that feeling.” This year, they want to embrace the excitement of new beginnings and a reflective mindset toward the future. A past project taught Emma that having a strong narrative helps create a cohesive show, guiding both visuals and performance. “That’s exactly how we’re approaching the AMP stage visuals, and I can’t wait to see it all come together!”

The DGTL feeling

We asked the duo why DGTL is so special for them. Emma says that DGTL always felt like a home for her. “It was the first festival I attended after moving to the Netherlands, and the place that first sparked my passion for working with light.” Everytime Emma works for DGTL, the atmosphere, the team, and the music make it a special experience. “These are the moments that make DGTL unforgettable.” Deborah tells us that DGTL was her first festival where she has ever done visuals on such a big scale, this was at the modular stage. She also did Area 1 a few times. “I’ve learnt a lot from these experiences, the different stages and screens, and it’s always such a beautiful new opportunity to create something beautiful and exciting together.”

Balancing light and energy outdoors

Working with visuals on an outdoor stage, like at DGTL, presents unique challenges. The bright daylight reduces the immediate impact of the screens, so visuals must blend with the surroundings. Emma’s and Deborah's mentor Zalán said, “The sky is like a screen too,” and they agree,it’s all about balancing colors and matching the environment. Outdoors, there’s a dynamic flow of energy: you can build tension earlier in the day and surprise the crowd as the night falls. “At AMP this year, when the sun sets, the visuals will truly come to life”, Emma says.

A message to young creatives

One thing Deborah wants to say to young creatives is: “Ask! Explore, talk, be curious and show interest!” Emma thinks that it’s important to always try new things. “Experimenting with different methods, tools, and software is a great way to expand your creativity and discover new possibilities.” You can follow Emma’s en Deborah’s journey and work on Instagram: @emmamilasiute and @orah________
